If you love France’s iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, then head to the rugged Spanish region of Calatayud, where you’ll also find powerful reds starring Grenache (aka Garnacha). Manga del Brujo was the first wine Norrel Robertson (a Master of Wine/“MW”) ever made at his El Escocés Volante estate in Aragón. It’s been more than 10 years now, and in addition to huge acclaim nearly every vintage, it’s gained an almost cult-like following with wine fans all over the world. You’ll know why as soon as you taste it… Norrel Robertson MW sourced grapes from the chalk and clay soils on the slopes of Monte Armantes in the Ribota Valley of Calatayud. It’s a classic Châteauneuf blend of hand-harvested, old-vine Garnacha (70%) and Syrah (15%) plus local star grapes, Provechón (10%) and Mazuelo (5%). After a cool fermentation, it was aged for 20 months in cement tanks (to preserve its intense fruit character). The 2021 release arrives with multiple 90+ point scores: 92 points from The Wine Advocate, 93 points from critic James Suckling and 94 points from critic Tim Atkin MW. “Attractive mix of red and dark berries, dried orange peel, blue flowers, hints of sea shell and white pepper,” writes James Suckling. “So juicy and mouth-filling with crunchy acidity. Lots of tension and energy here with a bright, berry-soaked finish. The tannins are structured and meaty…Beautiful now, but can hold, too.” You’ll also discover ripe cherry aromas, plus inviting wild herb notes. The palate is velvety smooth, with earthy notes rounding out the complex finish. It will really come into its own with a special meal, like slow-roasted lamb or braised beef. "Greek wines are having their moment in the sun."

This refreshing white shows why Greek wines are becoming increasingly popular. Combining two of the country's classic grape varieties, Savatiano and Assyrtiko, it offers white peach and pear aromas, vibrant citrus fruit and a pithy finish.

“At last, Greek wines are having their moment in the sun” writes Jane MacQuitty, a wine critic at The Times. And it’s all thanks to wines like Melpo by Muses, an ultra-refreshing, citrus-charged white from the family-owned Muses Estate.

Named for its idyllic location, the Valley of the Muses near Athens, where wine has been made for more than 1,000 years, the winery’s roots date back to 1946, when Nikolaos Zaharias—just one of 1,500 area residents at the time—founded a modest winemaking facility. His son stepped in 20 years later and brought the operation up to speed, slowing planting new vines and installing more advanced equipment.

Today, everything is in the hands of his sons, Nikos, Stelios and Panayiotis, who aim to work in harmony with nature to create the most delicious, most quintessentially Greek wines they can, focusing on indigenous varieties and high quality

“We plant all of our vines in densely planted rows, a technique which results in lower yields per vine and, therefore, higher quality grapes,” they say. “After strict selection in the vineyard, these will be carried to our winery, to give us the best possible starting point for our wines.”

This one combines Assyrtiko, Greece’s best-loved white grape, with a local grape called Savatiano—“the Chenin Blanc of Greece,” according to Decanter. On the palate, peachy-keen fruit flavors mingle with lemon and other citrus fruit tones, to make a perfect match for seafood that’s also delectable sipped solo in the sun.
