Beyond the Label

Smooth, fruit-packed ‘Super Tuscan’ reds (blends of international grapes like Cabernet with Tuscan stars like Sangiovese) are some of Italy’s most renowned, expensive wines. Here’s a deliciously powerful challenger to the style from sunny Puglia and Angelo Maci, who’s won Vinitaly’s Winemaker of the Year title multiple times.

Angelo’s Tenuta Albrizzi has also won big at Vinitaly, counting the competition’s coveted Grand Gold medal among its many previous accolades (it’s only given to 17 out of 3,000+ entries, so no small shakes!). This new release is sure to be a winner at your table, too.

For his ‘Super Puglian,’ Angelo paired up his Cabernet with Primitivo, Puglia’s signature red. Known as the ‘Godfather’ of southern Italian grapes for its deep, dark character, it adds layers of sun-baked cherry and blackberry to the rich, chocolatey Cabernet. All the grapes grow on Angelo’s prized ancient vines—low-yielding heirlooms that contribute layers of concentrated flavor to his wines. (The crop was especially small in 2020, after spring frosts and a dry growing season, so there’s even less to go around than usual.)

Led by major talents like Angelo (a BIG name in Puglia), this deep southern Italian region has emerged as a top spot for flavor- and value-packed reds—retired über critic Robert Parker has even called Puglian wines “sensational bargains with real soul.” Definitely a wine world spot to check off your list if you haven’t already …
