Originally from Greece, Ribolla Gialla is a white grape that’s found the perfect home in Friuli, Italy. Locals love it, especially when used for sparklers like this one. With fine bubbles and delicate fruit flavors, it’s sure to win you over, too.

Bored with Prosecco but searching for Italian fizz that’s less expensive than Franciacorta? We’ve got you covered. Crafted from a lesser known grape called Ribolla Gialla, Cuvée Biele Zôe is a delicious sparkling alternative that pops with delicate flavors of orchard fruit, citrus and apricot.

The wine comes to us from Valerio Civa, an expert in all things Ribolla, who established his Tenimenti Civa estate in 2016 with a plan to give the variety the attention it deserves in the Friuli Orientali Hills of northern Italy.

He works with a single 56-ish-acre vineyard of the grape—one of the largest plantings in the Colli Orientali del Friuli—in and around the tiny village of Bellazoia, where he first developed an appreciation for the grape.

Though experts believe it originated in Greece, Ribolla has a long history in this part of Italy. Historical records show it’s been cultivated in the area since the 1800s! It also doesn’t hurt that it’s where Valerio was raised and spent summers helping his grandparents tend their vineyards, either.

Today, Valerio and team craft a range of still, semi-sparkling and sparkling wines using the grape. This one is far and away our favorite of the bunch, made via the same production method as Prosecco and fermented extra dry (i.e. made in a super crisp, refreshing style).

Expect subtle flavors of yellow and green apples, lemon peel and fresh-picked apricot, and a fine bubble stream—just the thing to chill well and pour generously.
