Flavor Profile
Pillastro Nero is a true ‘black red’—from the ornate label to the deep, dark wine inside. It’s made by Angelo Maci, three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year, using Cabernet Sauvignon and Primitivo grown in his 80-year-old albarello-trained vineyard. These bush vines are gnarled heirlooms that yield precious few grapes that are like little knots of intensely concentrated flavor.
Back in the winery, Angelo he aged Pillastro Nero for six months. This imparted toasty oak and sweet spice notes to the wine’s lusciously ripe, black- and bramble-fruit flavors.
Velvety enough to enjoy on its own, Pillastro Nero will also shine alongside a juicy steak or heaping plate of spaghetti and meatballs. And it’s sure to impress fans of Angelo’s Pillastro collection—which happen to be some of the most popular Italian wines in our cellar—or any lovers of BIG, super-rich reds.
