Flavor Profile
Each week, Weekend Edition Saturday and Weekend Edition Sunday serve up the perfect combination of hard news, culture and human interest stories to keep NPR listeners informed and entertained. Similarly, NPR Weekend Edition Red Blend delivers an ideal balance of bold, ripe fruit flavors and structure to satisfy new wine lovers and discerning sippers, alike.
To make the wine, we headed to some of our favorite vineyards in California’s Central Valley, where red grapes ripen to perfection in the state’s warm, sun-kissed conditions. With so much great fruit at hand, creating a beautiful, balanced wine was as easy as tuning into our favorite radio station. We chose a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tannat: Cab for its bold structure and dark fruit, Merlot for softness and lush plum, and Tannat for its spice and intensity.
The resulting wine pours an attractive deep ruby color that appeals instantly with its heady black fruit flavors. On the palate, tones of blackberry and black cherry emerge, layered with notes of spice. It’s a lot of flavor but it's all kept neatly in check by gentle, pliable tannins.
It’s just the thing to enjoy with good friends and a lively discussion of the week's events.
