Beyond the Label

Crisp, citrusy Pinot Grigio is northern Italy’s star white – but in the country’s exciting south, up-and-coming wines, like flavor-rich Fiano, are giving it a run for its money. The inaugural vintage of Matervitae was released to international gold-medal acclaim. The equally classy 2018 is a must try, especially if you’re a fan of Italian whites.

In Puglia, the sunny heel of Italy’s ‘boot,’ Torrevento is a top name. It’s run by the Liantonio family, who’ve produced wines using time-honored, traditional methods since just after World War II. At nearly 2,000 feet above sea level, their vineyards are some of the highest and sunniest in Puglia, perfect for ripening Fiano beautifully.

This luscious example delivers layers of vibrant peach, pear, and white blossoms, along with a long, refreshing finish. Sip well chilled with light pastas or nearly all types of seafood and white meats. Hurry – few cases imported.
