Every year, fifth-generation winemaker Scipione Giuliani scours the vineyards of Italy in search of the ideal grapes to use in his Il Papavero red blend. This versatile red reminds us of an authentic house wine you'd find at a trattoria in Italy. Delicious with or without food, it pairs effortlessly with a range of classic Italian dishes. As wine critic Richard Neill once wrote, "If all table wines tasted this good, no one would leave the table!" The value is second to none, and as you can already guess, it's ideal for weeknights and parties. The secret? Scipione selects the ripest, most flavorsome grapes from the top-performing regions to ensure Il Papavero is always supple with red berry fruit. Sangiovese from the Marches or Emilia-Romagna, Montepulciano from the Abruzzo, plus Negroamaro and Nero d’Avola from Puglia and the south—a perfect combination. When you pour a glass of Il Papavero, you’ll be greeted by its deep ruby color, along with its fresh red cherry, black cherry and spice aromas. Expect similar notes on the palate, as well as a silky finish. Serve to good friends, preferably with a heaping bowl of spaghetti and meatballs or fresh pizza. Il Papavero

Rich, full-bodied and deeply fruited, Pillastro Primitivo is an incredible value made by Cantine Due Palme—one of the most prominent wine cooperatives in the heel of Italy’s boot—from some serious old vines.

From Puglia, in the “heel” of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula, Pillastro Primitivo is a soulful and sumptuously fruited red that’s sure to please. Earning more than 60 various awards since its first vintage, it’s packed with spiced plum and raspberry flavors that’d appeal easily to new wine lovers and experienced sippers, alike.

But this wine’s popularity is hardly a surprise when you consider the source. It hails from Cantine Due Palme, a winemaking cooperative that’s also got plenty of awards to its name, including Gambero Rosso’s Cooperative Cellar of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. Not to mention, it was founded by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci. 

A third-generation winemaker from Salento, Puglia, Angelo is something of a local legend. When he launched the winery back in 1989, he championed small, independent grape-growing folks who were being let down by bigger wine corporations. Back then, he worked with just 15 families. Today, the co-op counts 1,000+ members—managing some 7,500 acres of vines between them. 

 Now more than 80 years old, Angelo has begun taking steps away from Due Palme, handing control of operations to his daughter Melissa, while his grandson, Francesco Fortunato, has taken over winemaking. And the wines are tasting better than ever. 

For this one, Francesco and the Cantine Due Palme team only used fruit from the co-op’s old vines. Because the gnarled beauties produce fewer grapes, their fruit is much more concentrated, leading to wines with more intense and complex flavors with richer textures.All of which your sure to taste when you pour a glass for yourself.

Pillastro Selezione d'Oro Puglia

“Sicily has something for everyone…spanning international and local varieties…and perfect growing conditions,” according to Vinous. Saserello is an excellent example, packed with sun-baked dark fruit, hints of black pepper and toasty vanilla.

From the sun-drenched island of Sicily and the talented Andrea Bernardini, Saserello Rosso is a fruit-packed sensation. Previous vintages have a lengthy award pedigree and it’s a BIG customer favorite. 

It’s a ‘Super Sicilian’ take on the sought-after ‘Super Tuscan’ style that’s popular—and significantly more expensive—at the heart of the boot. The grapes are grown on Sicily’s rocky coast (the name Saserello is derived from sassi, which means ‘stones’). 

What’s so ‘Super’ about it? The addition of international Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah to Italian native star Sangiovese. In western Sicily, the mineral-rich soils impart deep, complex flavors to Cabernet and Merlot; meanwhile, Syrah and Sangiovese are grown in nearby coastal vineyards that encourage a “new world” ripeness. 

Look forward to mouthfuls of sun-baked dark fruit, spicy black pepper and toasty vanilla. It’s a tasty partner for hearty red- and game meats, pasta dishes and full-flavored cheeses.

Vecciano

Purezza Red

This light and fragrant red from northeastern Italy is the perfect do-it-all bottle. Bursting with juicy fruit character, it’s ultra versatile on the table and is even more delicious when served with a slight chill. 



Aged just four months in stainless steel tanks to preserve its vivacious character, Casa Giona Bardolino is the juicy and refreshing, food friendly Italian red we just can’t stop pouring. And we know you’ll feel the same once you get a taste!

It comes to us from the shores of Lake Garda, in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, and the small-but-mighty, little-known area of Bardolino. The much more famous region of Valpolicella is its neighbor, and the two focus on the same set of grapes, including Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara, the three varieties that go into this bottling.

Here, they’re exposed to near-idyllic growing conditions: Lake breezes and cool mountain air (from the closeby Alpine foothills) criss-cross the vineyards and keep grapes fresh, while sunlight reflects off the lake, moderating temperature variations and helping them ripen to perfection.

To make this selection, winemaker Enrico Nicolis and the team at Tenute Salvaterra hand harvest the little gems, then press them softly and ferment the juice at a carefully controlled temperature. The resulting wine is youthful and invigorating—like Italy’s answer to cru Beaujolais.

Expect flirty red fruit flavors, a light to medium body and soft tannins, and plan to serve it with a light chill for ultimate deliciousness.
