Great-Vintage Reds Dozen + Le Secret Pinot Noir Trio

Crafted by the legendary Paolo Masi with hand-harvested grapes from the rolling hills above Rufina, in Tuscany, Collezione di Paolo Chianti Riserva is a structured, medium-bodied bestseller with dark fruit and earth flavors hemmed in by firm tannins. Part of the wine's success is undoubtably tied to its terroir: One of the smallest subzones of Chianti, it's a little way removed from most of the rest of the region, with high-elevation vineyards that climb up to 1600 feet above sea level. This creates a wide day-night temperrature swing, that keeps the fruit extra fresh, while abdundant sunshine ripens the grapes to perfection. But the winemaker has a lot to do with it, too. For over two decades, Paolo (below) has been earning heaps of praise for making his family’s wines better and better. Robert Parker has said that “Paolo Masi has made an excellent impression with the estate wines of his family property.” Italy’s top wine guide, Gambero Rosso, meanwhile, says his wines offer “irreproachably clean fruit and abundant personality.” For this bottling, Paolo insisted on using only the finest, top-grade oak barrels to age the wine for 14 months. It was then aged even longer in bottle—about 10 months—which means it's ready and delicious right now, but will also develop nicely over the next few years. Previous vintages have earned 90+ points and been called "composed and juicy" and "pretty and understated" by top critic James Suckling. Le Champ des Etoiles is our most popular French Pinot, thanks to its vibrant red berry flavors and silky texture. But its winemaker, Mark Hoddy, thought he could craft something even more delicious using top grapes from the south of France. Le Secret des Etoiles is the strawberry-inflected, barrel aged result. Why the south of France? Well, because Burgundy can’t have all the fun. And because the sunny Languedoc region is home to some seriously exceptional grapes…if you know where to look. (Which is exactly why top Burgundy houses like Louis Latour and Bouchard Aîné et Fils have headed south.) In the glass, the wine will greet you with aromas of intensely ripe strawberry, cherry and wild herbs, with touches of toasty vanilla spice from the wine’s time in Burgundian barrels. Le Secret des Etoiles Pinot Noir

Puglia’s treasured Nero di Troia grape is steeped in legend. This expression from the super-talented Andrea Bernardini is deep, dark and full of southern Italian warmth. Sporting a long history of acclaim, it’s also a winner with pastas or red meats.

Made by the talented Andrea Bernardini, Corsiero Nero is a bold and dark-fruited, glass-staining red crafted from select parcels of rare Nero di Troia grapes grown in the foothills of the Apennines in Puglia. The unusual grape variety takes its name from the nearby town of Troia, which, as legend has it, was founded by Greek hero Diomedes after sacking the city of Troy in Asia Minor. Even great warriors eventually turn to more gentle pursuits, and maybe it was Nero di Troia which made Diomedes settle in Italy, using his last years to make wine from this fascinating grape variety. Italian for ‘Black Charger’ (like the trusty steed on the label), Corsiero Nero was aged three months in fine French oak and lives up to its valiant name. From your very first sip, you’ll see why this beauty boasts a long history of acclaim. Enchanting aromas of blackberry, violet, smoky vanilla and oak smooth out into similar flavors across a long, intense finish. Try it alongside some of Bernardini’s favorite pairings, including grilled sirloin, roasted pork belly and fennel, or full-flavored cheeses. Might want to gallop for your share, though. Corsiero Nero Puglia

Rioja is Spain’s premier region and Ribera del Duero is quickly becoming its top rival. This perfectly matured Reserva, with superbly balanced earthy tones and strawberry flavors, will show you why.

With a dark, broad and balanced palate of red fruit and earth, Hacienda del Arte Reserva is an authentic expression of Ribera del Duero—the latest Spanish region to be on all the top critics’ lips and being stockpiled in all the collectors' cellars. Just southwest of Rioja, Ribera del Duero has, in recent years, become seen as one of the country’s top red wine regions, admired increasingly for its full-bodied, age-worthy Tempranillos that are, as Decanter declares, “in line with great wines all over the world.” Vineyards here stretch up and across a high plateau, some 2,800 feet above sea level, where the area’s unforgiving heat is cut by cool nighttime temps. This extends the grapes’ ripening well into fall and ensures they are harvested at maximum flavor. The resulting wines are deeply colored, dense and more concentrated than most Riojas. But in the right hands and with adequate aging, they are eminently drinkable and humming with sweet-savory fruit. So, when we got a call from our old friend Javier Murúa (shown below), the third-generation face of Bodegas Muriel, who recently led his family’s foray into Ribera, our ears perked up. He’d just purchased a winery a mere 14 miles from Vega Sicilia—widely considered to be the area’s best producer, who’s flagship wine is sold for up to $800 a bottle—and discovered a cellar full of treasures. This nine-year-old Reservas was one of his discoveries, and guess which old friends he offered it to… A real rarity at an incredible friends-only price, it delivers a weight of wild and dried strawberries framed by earthy notes, cocoa nib and pliable tannins. This is one you won’t want to miss. Extremely limited. High sell out risk.
