Beyond the Label

Field of Stones Sauvignon Blanc is the crown jewel of Marlborough, crafted by Beth Forrest, daughter of Dr. John Forrest and now head winemaker at Forrest Wines. Crisp and dry, it delivers lively aromas and flavors of lime and tropical fruit through its mineral-driven finish.

Famed wine critic Huon Hooke has called the Forrests “one of New Zealand’s finest producers” and remarked that their flagship Sauvignon Blanc release is “as good as it gets.”

While the former is definitely true, the latter is disproven by this special cuvée—which we think drinks neck and shoulders above the original.

It’s crafted from a prized, single-acre vineyard that’s home to the oldest vines at the family's estate and is widely considered one of the best in all of Marlborough. It sits on a stony patch of land—hence the name—along the Wairau River, which lends a distinct mineral edge reminiscent of fine Sancerre (the most famous Sauvignon Blanc from France’s Loire Valley).

In the glass, that character marries with flavors of guava, lemon-thyme and elderflower, and a vibrant acidity that frames the long finish. Though a fine match for chicken, shellfish or green salads, it’s one we prefer to savor all on its own.
