Beyond the Label

The Holy Grail for Bordeaux Fans
Turn right out of Lafite ($1,300-plus a bottle for their 2009). Head past Mouton ($1,000-plus). Go through a small wood, and the next vineyards you'll come to are those of Château Ramage La Batisse – planted to the same mix of Merlot and Cabernet. This Cru Bourgeois estate offers exceptional value and has "an impressive track record for quality for close to 30 years … Ramage La Batisse represents an elegant style of Bordeaux," says Robert Parker.

Château Ramage La Batisse is a Bordeaux lover’s dream – decked out in a slew of medals (including five golds) and cellared to perfection. It's a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 12 months in fine French barriques, that hails from the historic 2009 vintage, which Robert Parker scored a near-perfect 99 points overall: "2009 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in Bordeaux since 1982."

This classic Cru Bourgeois is filled with ripe plum and dark berry fruit, smoky cedar and minerally notes that are typical of the region. We recommend decanting it a few hours before serving – especially if you plan to open it in the next few years – to help round out its mouthfilling tannins and separate any naturally occurring sediment from the wine. It's definitely a wine for food, and will be a winner with hearty red meat dishes like a rack of lamb, roast beef or prime rib.

If you've caught our offers on previous vintages, you’ll know how good Ramage is – and you’ll wisely pounce on the 2009 too.

This is a brand-new shipment directly from the château. Very limited cases imported – secure yours today.
