Beyond the Label

Château Larcis Ducasse is one of the most famous estates in Bordeaux’s picturesque Right Bank village of Saint-Émilion. Its small vineyard is only 11.3 hectares in size, yet is renowned for making some of the finest reds in the world. Today, it is one of just 12 châteaux to carry the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B.

Layered with soils of limestone, chalk and clay, its vineyard benefits from an ideal south-facing exposition, where its Merlot (83%) and Cabernet Franc (17%) plantings are watched over by nearby fig and laurel trees. The property abuts famed Château Pavie, and has been owned by the Gratiot-Attmane family since 1893, with support from Nicolas Thienpont (whose family is behind icons like Le Pin, L’If and Veiux Château Certan) since 2022.

"I always love this wine and the 2017 Chateau Larcis Ducasse is no exception. Offering up a complex bouquet of spiced red and black fruits, white truffle, smoked game, and hints of underbrush, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, nicely integrated acidity, and present yet ripe, polished tannins as well as subtle background oak. It's not a blockbuster like the 2015 and 2016 but has a terrific sense of minerality, flawless balance, and a great finish.” – Jeb Dunnuck.
