Rich, full-bodied and deeply fruited, Pillastro Primitivo is an incredible value made by Cantine Due Palme—one of the most prominent wine cooperatives in the heel of Italy’s boot—from some serious old vines.

From Puglia, in the “heel” of Italy's boot-shaped peninsula, Pillastro Primitivo is a soulful and sumptuously fruited red that’s sure to please. Earning more than 60 various awards since its first vintage, it’s packed with spiced plum and raspberry flavors that’d appeal easily to new wine lovers and experienced sippers, alike.

But this wine’s popularity is hardly a surprise when you consider the source. It hails from Cantine Due Palme, a winemaking cooperative that’s also got plenty of awards to its name, including Gambero Rosso’s Cooperative Cellar of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. Not to mention, it was founded by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci. 

A third-generation winemaker from Salento, Puglia, Angelo is something of a local legend. When he launched the winery back in 1989, he championed small, independent grape-growing folks who were being let down by bigger wine corporations. Back then, he worked with just 15 families. Today, the co-op counts 1,000+ members—managing some 7,500 acres of vines between them. 

 Now more than 80 years old, Angelo has begun taking steps away from Due Palme, handing control of operations to his daughter Melissa, while his grandson, Francesco Fortunato, has taken over winemaking. And the wines are tasting better than ever. 

For this one, Francesco and the Cantine Due Palme team only used fruit from the co-op’s old vines. Because the gnarled beauties produce fewer grapes, their fruit is much more concentrated, leading to wines with more intense and complex flavors with richer textures.All of which your sure to taste when you pour a glass for yourself.

Crafted by the family’s award-winning winemaker, Sofia Barbanera, it brims with luscious cherry and vanilla notes, and is a serious treat for lovers of any super-rich red. After the immense success of Saracosa—one of our best-selling and most popular Italian reds—Sofia was inspired to create a wine with even greater depth, complexity and flavor concentration. And boy, did she deliver. She turned to Tuscany’s historic governo method and allowed a portion of her ripe Sangiovese to air dry for 20 days. This process dials the flavor concentration and complexity of the wine way, way up. Blending in some Merlot then imparted a soft, plummy smoothness and time aging in oak barrels weaved inviting spice notes throughout. Saracosa Governo Rosso

From hallowed Chianti Classico vineyards (next to Fontodi, whose flagship red costs $100+ a bottle), this superb Sangiovese-Merlot from the stellar 2022 vintage was made using an ancient, flavor-boosting method and boasts a history of major acclaim.

Scarànto is our most exciting Tuscan red in years. It hails from special vineyards in the Conca d’Oro (golden conch)—a hallowed, shell-shaped slope in the heart of Chianti’s famed Panzano district. Equally thrilling, those vineyards are right next door to Fontodi, whose flagship red costs over $100 a bottle. 

Scarànto is the first solo project from the hugely talented Matteo Bernabei. He works alongside his legendary father Franco—dubbed “Mr. Sangiovese” by the Italian press—as a consultant to some of Italy’s top estates (like the aforementioned Fontodi). The previous vintage of Scarànto received a perfect 100-point score from Italian critic Cosimo Dell’Anna, and we can’t wait to see the acclaim this new release racks up. 

For this hugely acclaimed, barrel-aged Super Tuscan-blend of Sangiovese (70%) and Merlot (30%), Matteo used the traditional governo method. After hand harvesting the fruit in September, he held back a small amount of Sangiovese grapes, air drying them until December. Called leggermente appassito, these raisined grapes are added to the wine for a flavor-boosting secondary fermentation that brings extra richness and concentration.

Scarànto

It’s the pride-and-joy release of Cantine Federici––led today by third-generation winemaker Damiano Federici––one of the most respected producers in Italy’s Roma region. Their small estate in the hills outside Roma consistently garners international acclaim for its luscious reds, enchanting whites and frothy bubbles.

Their passion? Cesanese––a grape grown in the region since at least 800 BC that’s “poised to become one of the hottest rediscovered red grapes in central Italy,” says Wine Enthusiast. 

Antonio Federici Rosso combines the grape with Montepulciano grown in the very hills that once supplied stone for the Colosseum. A portion of grapes are dried before fermentation, concentrating flavors. And when all is said and done, the wine is aged for three years to enhance its smoothness, depth and complexity.

Antonio Federici Rosso Roma

Winemaker Leonardo Palumbo will only put his name on a wine that he’s really happy with. His sumptuous red is made from three top Puglian grapes—Nero di Troia, Negroamaro and Primitivo—and offers delightfully dark, spiced fruit flavors.

From the sun-drenched vineyards of Puglia comes Palumbo, a bold red wine that captures the heart of southern Italy. The region, often nicknamed the stiletto heel of Italy, is known for its rich, characterful reds that seriously over-deliver for their price tag. As Wine Spectator notes, “Italy’s star continues to rise in the wine world, and Puglia is providing some of the fuel for liftoff.”

This wine comes from the highly respected Torrevento estate, where head winemaker Leonardo Palumbo has crafted his share of impressive wines. For this wine, he chose an equal blend of three native grape varieties and called the cuvée ‘Tre Terzi’ or ‘three thirds.’ When he tasted the final wine, Leonardo was so proud of his creation that he gave it his name instead—a longstanding tradition in his family of winemakers. 

It's a smooth, full-fruited blend of Puglia’s best grapes: Nero di Troia for its violet aromas, silky tannins and elegant peppery fruit; Negroamaro for deep color, dark plum and earthy richness; and Primitivo for plum hints and deeper bass notes. They make a perfect ensemble—lots of dark, juicy flavor with ripeness and depth. 

Very sippable on its own, it's even better with grilled meats, a tomato and canellini bean casserole richly flavored with garlic and herbs, or—of course—a hearty bowl of pasta!

Palumbo Puglia

Made with organically grown, sustainably farmed grapes and bottled in 100% recycled glass, Dino Taschetta’s chillable, thrillable Frappato is easy drinking and easy on the planet. That’s why he named it “w/o”—it’s wine without compromise.

Shorthand for "without," w/o Frappato is a berry-cherry-raspberry thriller born from the belief that you should be able to enjoy great wine knowing it’s been crafted sustainably: 100% enjoyment, without compromise. 

 The man behind it is third-generation winemaker Dino Taschetta, who makes some of our favorite Sicilian wines from his grandfather’s old vineyard. The site was devastated by an earthquake some 50 years ago, but Dino’s efforts have slowly brought it back to life.

The undertaking has endowed him with a deep respect for nature that he carries throughout his production, whether or not working with fruit from that vineyard. It was certainly the impetus behind his w/o mini-collection (which also includes a white and a rosé).

Intensely aromatic, floral and juicy with ripe fruit and low tannins, this one was made from organically grown Frappato—a local Sicilian grape—and is completely vegan. It was also sealed with sustainably grown cork and packaged in eco-friendly Wild Glass (made with 100% recycled glass), which has also minimal labeling, so the bottle is easy to recycle.

Dino recommends serving it lightly chilled as an aperitif or paired with simple pastas, roasted white meats and hearty fish. Overall, it’s a brilliant, authentic Sicilian red—without compromise.

w/o Frappato

Antica Fattoria La Parrina is one of only two wineries in Italy to have its own appellation (the other is Sassicaia, whose wines sell for $250+). Enjoy its 91-point Muraccio Super Tuscan, made from organically grown grapes and patiently barrel aged.

Antica Fattoria La Parrina is the only estate in Tuscany’s elite Parrina D.O.C. It’s also one of only two wineries in Italy to have its own appellation. The other is ultra-famous Sassicaia, whose flagship Super Tuscan will run you $250+ a bottle. Parrina’s Muraccio Super Tuscan, by comparison, is a remarkable price. To craft Muraccio, talented winemaker Valeria Vittori selected the best Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the estate’s organically farmed vineyards. The vines grow along the property’s foothills, an area the team calls muraccio, after the ancient Roman wall discovered there. In the cellar, Valeria gently crushed the grapes to extract every bit of color and flavor, then aged the wine in her finest oak barrels. Muraccio released to a 91-point score from Vinous.com: “Bold and juicy, the 2021 offers tons of immediacy. Crushed flowers, spice, dried leaves and tobacco lend nuance to a core of dark red berry fruit.” It’s an exquisite wine to enjoy alongside classic Italian cuisine. Muraccio

“This isn’t your usual wine from Piedmont. It’s been tamed into a soft, ripe, fruity red.”

The Sartirano family has crafted world-class wines in northern Italy’s renowned Piedmont region for four generations. Current proprietor Paolo is proud to send his latest masterpiece, a silky, red-fruited Barbera that’s perfect for pizza night.

The Sartirano family has tended vineyards in Piedmont’s beautiful rolling hills for four generations, making fine wines in the style for which the region is renowned, complemented by a range of more unusual blends. Domare falls neatly in the middle, offering characteristic cherry, raspberry and plum flavors with a silkier mouthfeel than you may expect from Barbera. Barbera is one of the Piedmont region’s star red grape varieties, adored by locals and international wine enthusiasts alike for delivering a lot of flavor for a good value. To make this one, current proprietor, Paolo, selected perfectly ripened grapes from the family’s estate vineyards and blended in a small percentage of Dolcetto, another beloved native grape. In his words, this helped to tame (“domare”) the wine, making it softer and fruitier. The result offers juicy, ripe dark cherry and red plum flavors framed by pliable, silky tannins and a pleasing crunch of freshness. It's perfect for pairing with traditional Italian dishes of all types, from charcuterie plates to pizza, pastas and beyond.
