Beyond the Label

One of the most underrated Cabernet value hot-spots in the world? It’s not France – or California. It’s sunny, arid Spain. And our expert Beth has rustled up a very tasty new discovery that’ll shine with any grilled red meats (and is priced for pouring very generously).

The renowned Crin Roja winery perches atop a sun-drenched hill in an ancient Iberian/Roman/Arab settlement in the tucked-away province of Albacete. The team here proudly use a sustainable growing system, which maximizes the use of natural resources and minimizes environmental impact. And, as it happens, it helps them produce exceptionally pure-fruited, concentrated Cabs.

First, the bottle is classic Spain – that wire netting will cut a striking figure on any dinner table. Crack her open, and you’ll be greeted warmly with aromas and flavors of ripe, heady blackberries, plums, and currants, plus very subtle baking spice. A fine choice for steak (one of Cabernet’s classic matches); for a truly Spanish twist, grill some flank steaks, then top with a saffron-butter sauce or roasted garlic cloves.
