Beyond the Label

21 Missions Merlot shows why it’s so important to have boots on the ground in wine country. Our local expert, Kristina Spencer, sourced this plush, dark-fruited red wine from prized California vineyards. She had to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to secure it at this incredible price, so we can’t reveal where it’s from.

We can say that, as the name implies, 21 Missions Merlot is absolutely heavenly. It honors California’s 21 historic missions, which inadvertently laid the foundation for the state’s now-burgeoning wine industry. When Spanish missionaries came to California, starting back in 1769, they brought and planted California’s first Vitis vinifera (European wine grape) vines. They began making wine for Holy Communion and personal enjoyment, and the rest, as they say, is delicious history.

Look forward to inviting notes of ripe black fruit, accented by hints of cocoa, vanilla and baking spices. The wine is fruit-forward and velvety, with smooth-as-silk tannins. It’s definitely worthy of a special meal and will pair beautifully with wild mushroom risotto, braised short ribs and so much more.
